Black Hat USA is fast approaching. With the full conference schedule online, now is the time for security pros to dive in and plan out their paths to exploring a wide range of learning opportunities. As with years past, the conference will feature sessions about new zero-day vulnerabilities, research that stretches the bounds of what's breakable in emerging technology, and new methods of defending systems in the ever-evolving tech world.

Ericka Chickowski specializes in coverage of information technology and business innovation. She has focused on information security for the better part of a decade and regularly writes about the security industry as a contributor to Dark Reading.  View Full Bio

Breaking Authentication and Privilege Escalation

  • Linux - I think a lot of this can be done using SELinux and boolean parameters

Container Hacking

  • This will be an interesting topic, the issue with containers are identified at the image level, if the image is not hardened, then I could see the potential areas of concern. Also, from a network standpoint, the virtual net can be added and changed but again, escalated privileges will be required.

Firmware and Embedded Hacking

  • Interesting, if software is installed on a vulnerable machine, it has to be executed in order for it to update the code from a firmware standpoint, this can be done in Windows (scheduler) and Linux (crontab) but the privileged level execution will be key and a reboot will be required in order for this to take place.

A number of application concerns can be thwarted using existing tools (filesystem, policy, domain, network, and apps) can help identify the potential problems associated with some of the topics covered in the BlackHat discussions. AppArmor (Application Management) and IPtables (Firewall) are other tools along with Fail2ban (IPS) can alleviate a large number of issues.

I have found about the gathering will highlight sessions about new zero-day vulnerabilities, inquire about that stretches the limits of what's weak in developing innovation, and new strategies for shielding frameworks in the regularly advancing tech world.

CVE-2020-11019
PUBLISHED: 2020-05-29
In FreeRDP less than or equal to 2.0.0, when running with logger set to "WLOG_TRACE", a possible crash of application could occur due to a read of an invalid array index. Data could be printed as string to local terminal. This has been fixed in 2.1.0.
CVE-2020-11038
PUBLISHED: 2020-05-29
In FreeRDP less than or equal to 2.0.0, an Integer Overflow to Buffer Overflow exists. When using /video redirection, a manipulated server can instruct the client to allocate a buffer with a smaller size than requested due to an integer overflow in size calculation. With later messages, the server c...
CVE-2020-11039
PUBLISHED: 2020-05-29
In FreeRDP less than or equal to 2.0.0, when using a manipulated server with USB redirection enabled (nearly) arbitrary memory can be read and written due to integer overflows in length checks. This has been patched in 2.1.0.
CVE-2020-11041
PUBLISHED: 2020-05-29
In FreeRDP less than or equal to 2.0.0, an outside controlled array index is used unchecked for data used as configuration for sound backend (alsa, oss, pulse, ...). The most likely outcome is a crash of the client instance followed by no or distorted sound or a session disconnect. If a user cannot ...

HUAWEI P30 smartphones with versions earlier than 10.1.0.135(C00E135R2P11) have an improper authentication vulnerability. A logic error occurs when handling NFC work, an attacker should establish a NFC connection to the target phone, and then do a series of operations on the target phone. Successful...
